Privacy Policy

This Privacy Policy explains how Mapbound ("Mapbound," "we," "us," or "our") handles information when you use our website, interactive prototype, mobile applications, and related support services.

1. Information we collect

Information you provide. This may include your email address, account and profile details, support messages, selected travel photos, visited-state history, map colors, badges, XP, and other content you choose to add.

Purchase information. Apple or Google processes mobile purchases. We may receive transaction identifiers, storefront, product purchased, and entitlement status. We do not receive your full payment-card number.

Device and usage information. Production versions may collect limited device type, operating system, app version, language, general interaction data, crash reports, and diagnostics to secure and improve Mapbound.

2. Photos and photo positioning

You choose which photos to add. Mapbound may crop, scale, or reposition a selected photo so it fits a state shape and keeps important subjects visible. Subject-aware or face-aware positioning is used for visual layout; it is not intended to identify who a person is.

The current website demo processes selected photos in your browser and stores them on your device when browser storage is available. Mapbound does not intentionally receive those demo photos. A future mobile app may offer optional cloud backup or synchronization and will disclose that transfer before it occurs.

3. Location

Location access is optional and used only when you choose Trail Verification or a similar verification feature. Mapbound does not require location to mark a state manually and does not use this feature for continuous or background tracking. You can deny or revoke location permission in your device settings.

4. How we use information

• Provide your map, photos, achievements, levels, and purchased features
• Save or synchronize progress when account sync is enabled
• Verify eligible visits when you request it
• Process entitlements and restore eligible purchases
• Respond to support, privacy, and deletion requests
• Maintain security, prevent abuse, diagnose problems, and improve performance
• Comply with legal obligations

5. How we share information

We do not sell personal photographs or precise location information. We may share information with vendors that help provide hosting, authentication, storage, analytics, crash reporting, customer support, and purchase processing; with Apple or Google for storefront transactions; when required by law; or as part of a merger, financing, acquisition, or sale of assets. Vendors may use information only as permitted by their agreements and applicable law.

6. Retention

We keep information only as long as reasonably necessary to provide Mapbound, fulfill the purposes described above, resolve disputes, protect the service, and meet legal obligations. Retention periods vary by data type. Deleted content may remain briefly in backups before routine removal. Limited transaction, tax, fraud-prevention, or security records may be retained when required.

7. Your choices and rights

You may edit travel progress, remove photos, control device permissions, and request access, correction, or deletion of personal information, subject to applicable law. To delete an account, use the in-app deletion control when available or visit our Account Deletion page. Depending on where you live, you may also have rights to obtain a copy of your data, restrict or object to certain processing, or appeal a privacy-request decision.

8. Security

We use reasonable administrative, technical, and organizational safeguards. No online service can guarantee absolute security, so please protect your account credentials and devices.

9. Children

Mapbound is intended for a general audience age 13 and older and is not directed to children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If you believe a child has provided information, contact us so we can investigate and delete it as appropriate.

10. International use

If you use Mapbound outside the United States, information may be processed in the United States or other countries where our service providers operate. We use protections required by applicable law for these transfers.

11. Changes to this policy

We may update this policy as Mapbound develops. We will post the revised policy and update the effective date. If a change is material, we will provide additional notice when required.
